It's hard when starting out in the digital music world of synthesizers to know where to start.  Obviously the first thing you have to do is get an instrument(s).  So here is a guide to the top synthesizer manufacturers.

In my honest opinion the three brands I recommend the most is Korg, Roland, and Rocktron, but don't ever limit yourself.  The whole concept of synth music is making new, interesting sounds.  I have found great sounds in experimenting with no name brand instruments, mixing instruments, circuit bending instruments and so on.  This music style is all about experimentation and fun.  The White Stripes lead guitarist, Jack White, says some of the best guitar sounds he has found is buy buying $10 amps from pawn shops.  Take his advice and try out anything you can find.
