Want to be a rockstar but don't want to use a guitar like everyone else?  Or perhaps you just want the challenge of creating that rock sound with a keyboard or synthesizer.  Here is your guide for doing just that.

The choices you have are using a keyboard, using a rocktron or stompbox with your keyboard(or other synthesizer instrument) to distort the sound, or using preprogrammed sounds on the computer.

Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages.  The easiest choice is the keyboard.  Most keyboards have hundreds of instruments already programmed into it.  Same with most synthesizers.  So the choice there is to just change it to the preset you want and get on with it.  A keytar is another good choice because you hold it like a guitar.

The next choice is hooking up a rocktron or stompbox to whatever musical machine you use.  This will create a hard edged metal noise and can be adjusted to get the sound you like.  This is recommended for harder rock, or throwbacks to bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Gwar, etc.

The final choice is using a computer program that provides preprogrammed instruments that you can manipulate on the computer and add post production to your song.  Without going into detail, it depends on the program you use and their instructions.  Audacity is a good free program. Another good program is Cake Walk or Garage Band if you have a Mac.
