I just found a great article on how to make a home music studio on the cheap in the latest Popular Mechanics issue (February 2010). I've given a few hints and articles on getting started in synthesizer music, but a full fledged DIY article was in the works. When I read this article, however, I thought it did a great job for the beginner who wants to setup their home music studio. I'll make a rundown of what you need, but you'll need to get the article for the full details.

The main things you will need are a computer(Mac or Windows or even Linux), a good recording Mic, a drum board, a keyboard, and a good sound card on your computer. There are other things you can add, but I think this is a good start. Popular Mechanics goes into the details of the exact products you should get, and gets you a professional home recording studio for under $5000. How To Make Synthesizer Music With A Guitar and Pedal

The great thing about synthesizer music is there are so many different methods you can go about making digital electronic music. You can use a guitar, a circuit bent electronics mess, wind, rocks, fruit, people(yes these have been done!). But for most they probably already have an electric guitar around or have learned another more traditional instrument first. If you already have a guitar and were thinking about getting into synth music look no further. With just a few addons and a computer(preferably the software Pro Tools as well), you can create these awesome sounds. Rather than me explain it, go to the EHX forums, where Effectology has already done a real extensive tutorial on how to make synthesizer music with a guitar. The nice thing about these tutorials is he has used several different devices and methods so you can choose which works best for you.

The Original Synth Techno Music – Kraftwerk – The Robots

Back in the late 70s the band that is given the title of creating techno and synthesizer music is the band Kraftwerk. One of the biggest songs is called The Robots, and the musical feel, and music video represent this robotic feel. This music created in 1979, still is popular today and has not got lost in the translation of different eras. You will enjoy its hypnotic beats, strange music video, and an appreciation for where the music you love comes from. What I appreciate about this song and this band is they are not a one hit wonder and they were innovators of their genre for many years.

The Difference Between Analog and Digital Synths Sound

When you get into synthesizer music eventually you will come across the analog versus digital debate. You may not get a clear answer on which is best because some artists are partial to one or the other flavor. Especially if you run into an old skool cat you will usually find that they prefer analog synths.

But if you know the difference between the two you can decide which is better: analog versus digital in a particular situation. One is not better than the other, they are just slightly different.

The main difference is the recording method. Analog records a continuous sound wave whereas digital records the sound based upon numbers from 0 to 9 where 0 is a lowpoint on the soundwave, and 9 is the highpoint on the sound wave. Rather than making a wave shape like analog the sound looks more like stairs or a bar graph.

What happens is analog records EVERYTHING where as digital music cuts out noise based upon the modified mathematical wave configured based upon the numbers. This actually gives digital a clearer crisper sound because it cuts out background noise and the small stuff such as diaphragm oscillation or that static humming sound.

In conclusion, analog is best suited for live shows, for a grungier real sound, or when you want to pickup subtle noises. In a word, analog is the RAW sound, where digital is the FILTERED sound.

An example of using analog may be if you want to recreate a sound similar to years passed such as the 70s or 80s, want to make an 8-bit sound, or are looking for a harder edged rock sound. Digital will work for most general purposes and will give you the best sound quality, and easiest to save to computer for modification.

How To Produce A Rock Sound With A Synthesizer

Want to be a rockstar but don't want to use a guitar like everyone else? Or perhaps you just want the challenge of creating that rock sound with a keyboard or synthesizer. Here is your guide for doing just that.

The choices you have are using a keyboard, using a rocktron or stompbox with your keyboard(or other synthesizer instrument) to distort the sound, or using preprogrammed sounds on the computer.

Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages. The easiest choice is the keyboard. Most keyboards have hundreds of instruments already programmed into it. Same with most synthesizers. So the choice there is to just change it to the preset you want and get on with it. A keytar is another good choice because you hold it like a guitar.

The next choice is hooking up a rocktron or stompbox to whatever musical machine you use. This will create a hard edged metal noise and can be adjusted to get the sound you like. This is recommended for harder rock, or throwbacks to bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Gwar, etc.

The final choice is using a computer program that provides preprogrammed instruments that you can manipulate on the computer and add post production to your song. Without going into detail, it depends on the program you use and their instructions. Audacity is a good free program. Another good program is Cake Walk or Garage Band if you have a Mac.

In conclusion, it depends partly on the sound you like, with the keyboard being your easiest and best choice, the stomp box as a more technical choice, and a computer program if you are good with computers.

The Korg DS-10 is a game cartridge for the popular Nintendo gaming system, the DS(or dual screen). It is most known for its fun kid's games, but with the advent of the new Nintendo DSI it has also become an exciting new tool for musicians, DJs, and digital music enthusiasts.

Korg is known as the defacto standard in the synthesizer music industry for their top quality electronic music making products.

This article covers how to make a midibox sid synthesizer instrument with the help of a commodore 64 and a sid kit. The Top 10 Best Synthesizer Brands

It's hard when starting out in the digital music world of synthesizers to know where to start. Obviously the first thing you have to do is get an instrument(s). So here is a guide to the top synthesizer manufacturers.

In my honest opinion the three brands I recommend the most is Korg, Roland, and Rocktron, but don't ever limit yourself. The whole concept of synth music is making new, interesting sounds. I have found great sounds in experimenting with no name brand instruments, mixing instruments, circuit bending instruments and so on. This music style is all about experimentation and fun. The White Stripes lead guitarist, Jack White, says some of the best guitar sounds he has found is buy buying $10 amps from pawn shops. Take his advice and try out anything you can find.

Here's some great live synthesizer music that's a throwback to the 80s including Herbie Hancock "Rockit", Axel F, Human League "You Know You Want Me", Ghostbusters, a-ha "Take on Me", and more! Probably 10 plus songs covered in 6 minutes. They make a good trio of great hits and add their own synth twist that makes it sound like the sountrack to an 80's rave. 6 guitars, a keytar, and 3 guys rocking the eighties. I especially like their robots voices, and the Mr. Robot-o solo. Wicked! If you are wondering how they did the robot voices, it is with a Banshee Rocktron Talk Box. Once I discovered that I went and bought one for myself. Rick Roll!
